An experience with Language Immersion

One of the biggest boost in my language learning ability happened during my Homestay.

This involved living with a Japanese family and attending a Japanese Middle School for 5 days. Here I was pretty much detached from English as both my host family and the teachers and students spoke very little English.

Language Immersion is a method of teaching a foreign language in this style, usually used on children and involves the children attending a school where they will learn things in the foreign language in order to encourage fluency.

This experience for me helped as I was re-learning things from many years ago so a lot of the time I was able to infer meanings from the general context of the lesson (for example during Maths once I was able to work out that we were being taught the method for working out the length of a hypotenuse I was then able to use the context to create links between the words I already knew in English and the Japanese words I was being given).
